auto vs.manual
wow this is funny.
it really shows how misled people are , from what there buddies neighbors uncle said he heard from his cuzin who was married to his sister.
do you have any idea what the lack of gearing in an aod is?????
1st is a 2.40 compared to a 3.35
an aod needs 4.10 gears to start off the line w/ the same leverage as a 5-speed w/ 2.73's
do the math...2.40 X 4.10 = 9.84 total 1st gear
.....................3.35 X 2.73 = 9.145 total 1st gear
you show me once where an aod w/ gears will beat a comparable equipped 5-speed and i will hand 5 dozen timeslips that show the opposite.
i have owned 6 5.0's and 2 of them were aod
my fastest NA aod ran 14.40's on sportsman pro's w/ a gt40 intake , motorsport headers, dynomax catback, 3.73 gears, 2200 stall, and the MS wide gear set. (1st = 2.84, 2nd = 1.55)
My '90 lx 'vert aod went 15.10 w/ 3.73 and street tires, 13.60 w/ 100 shot zex.
now for the 5-speeds...........
My '89 notch 5-speed went 13.60's 100% stock....4.10's and et streets
then w/ exhaust and dumped AC and smog, it went 13.20's
my '88 5-speed 100% stock on street tires to boot....went 14.20's
i can go on all day long.........and i speak from experience.
i had more money tied up in the aod cars from tranny rebuilds, then all my other 5.0's combined.and they were all slower than the stock 5-speeds.
tranny choice is personal preferance and to each his own.....but because 1 guy can beat a 5-speed driver doesn't mean squat, probably the 5-speed guys were on street tires.

Stock for stock a manual will always be quicker than an automatic (assuming that both vehicles have similar power outputs). But, like everyone else has said, an auto with a stall and a shift kit will be faster.
Im getting 3.73 for my auto gt (95), mainly because it will really wake it up from factory 2.73 gears. I am a highway driver and dont want all the high rpm's while driving 85mph on the freeway daily, or else I would have gotten 4.10's or even higher. Im not a friday night strip guy by any means, just want to wake up the 5.0 a little bit... hence i purchased probaly one of the heaviest stangs of all time, a convertible. But, yeah, a manual is more fun to drive, is much quicker and so on.... bottom line, manuals are simply cooler, i just dont like shifting them.

The auto will also loose more power in the driveline than a standard. My tranny went out in my GT after the power adder but it seems most people dont have a problem with their stock auto tranny and a power adder. ( 2 much track time and burnouts I guess) Lots of good info in the links below-Shane

I wanted to get a P&P job done then add a centrifugal S/C with about 300 to 325 HP, is it mandatory to have a manual trans or if you have the car tuned good, the auto trans will be able to handle the extra power?
Basically I wanna know if i have to get the trans swap first before I add power
