ya, it is rather common. I punched it in first gear coming home from work a couple weeks ago and threw the rear end around coming out of a turn. I knew there was 1/2 a tank left but all of a sudden the computer told me I was down to 10mi. It reset once I got down the road though. A lot of people have seen it if you take a corner fast, or do some donuts or something "fun".

+1 When I did donuts in my car the info display said 0 miles to empty after... when I actually had at least half tank of gas. It went back to normal as I drove off

There is a TSB on the issue. Due to sulfur in the fuel. You can go to the dealership and they will put dual wiper fuel senders in the tank. Use a different brand of fuel such as Shell or Chevron. Put in some fuel system cleaner to clear up the issue as well.
Im pretty sure thats not the tsb you're thinking about. That TSB is for the hesitation after long highway cruising. Type of fuel is not going to matter on the readout of the gauge. That is because of the saddle style fuel tank.
