Tuning and required octane

Tuning and required octane
I've been thinking of getting a CAI and a tune. I'm hearing about an increase octane requirement after a tune. Is it possible to add a CAI and get a tune that allows me to use 87 octane? If so, what are the pros/cons of doing this vs a tune requiring a higher octane level? My thoughts on this one are that I would simply have less HP gain as a result.

RE: Tuning and required octane
I am thinking most of the HP gains tuners and CAI peddlers are promoting are merely a function of taking advantage of an octane increase. Kenne Bell would make you believe you should stay away from the CAI market altogether. So you have to get a tune or a tuner to take advantage of octane, and CAI's are often bundled but its not clear there is an everyday benefit to the CAI.

Tuners can make a 87 octain tune apon request, although dont expect much in the way of an increase of power. In all honisty, the differant per tank of gas between premium and regular is between two and three dollars; even though yes it does add up. An intake kit of any sort will certainly help performance, but it is hard for most to get stand alone numbers from the need to adjust the tune for increased airflow and dynamics of the MAF. It would seem the MAF is not in it's own housing that can simply to bolted to a new assymbly, but rather transplanted into it's new home which changes the dynamics if the ID is larger (or smaller) than stock.

RE: Tuning and required octane
You can run the 87 octane tune w/o any problem. That's actually the recommended fuel for our 4.6L engine. You will have the option to go with a higher octane tune if you pick any of several tuners (like Brent @ www.brenspeed.com).

Bone stock I pulled 265 HP. Got a Steeda CAI and a dyno tune using SCT Xcalilabrator2 for 87 octane which was in the car. The install and tune was done by JDM Engineering in Freehold, NJ...all they do are Mustangs (post '99 I believe) and Lightning/Harley trucks...their website tells it all (teamjdm.com). They are totally up to speed on new 05-06 stangs and their new motors.
Post 87 tune results were 291 RWHP and 340 ft lbs torque. Came back with a tank full of 93 octane and results were 297 RWHP and 345 ft lbs torque. The difference was not really noticed...I ran the 93 out and they did another dyno with 87 and that's where I will leave it. Without a doubt, these 2 upgrades (especially a tune done professionally FOR YOUR SPECIFIC CAR)...not a pre-programed tune...man what a difference. FYI...Steeda CAI worked with FORD SVT in developing their CAI....therefore, If you have to go to dealer while under warranty, you do not have to yank it off and put back original air box. Enough said.
