I just changed it a little while ago today. Dug up my old GT stock intake and used a recharge kit on it. Took some pictures for some comparison!

The car definitely feels a lot more stout and I haven't actually watched my gas gauge move yet!

Your poor engine. With the look of that filter, looks like your car was smoking 2 packs a cigarettes/dayfor the last 20yrs

How do I get to the stock air box/air filter in the mach 1? Do I have to remove the shaker hood scoop? Thanks ahead. Just got back from work and foundmy K&N air filter andLM cat-back at home. Gonna try and put the K&N in if I figure out how to. Thanks ahead!

Your shaker doesn't have to come off at all, getting to the air filter itself is kind of a pain though if you're not taking the whole inlet tube off, but basically:

1. Use an 8mm ratchet to disconnect the airbox from the fender wall
2. Remove the little ribbed piece that attaches the shaker to the air box and set it aside.
3. This is the pain in the neck part.. The latch clip that attaches the MAF to the airbox needs to come off (you can see it in the top right corner of my original picture), so latch it back and loosen it up, and make sure the clip is off on the bottom as well, this is a bit tricky and is also what makes it difficult to disassemble as it's snugged around a little groove. I cannot tell you how long I couldn't figure out why she wasn't shakin' loose.
4. Yank up on the box till the two rubber grommets pop out of the body of the car at the bottom of the airbox. They wouldn't come out at first for me but a little elbow grease takes care of anything.
5. That's it! Take out the airbox that should be separated from the MAF now, and your filter should basically just fall out.
6. Drop your new filter in, and go backward.

Hope this helps. I didn't realize how miserable doing an air filter in this car was!

Changing an air filter has never been more of a pain in the *** as the stang. I despise it.

Man, that filter looks terrible! Check your throttle body too, just to make sure its not as black as that filter. I've been wondering about something....how much more dirt and road crap do you guys think our Machs are picking up due to the shaker? Notice how much dirtier the filter is where the ram air tube was. Mines like that too whenver I clean it. I just found out yesterday that my whole intake, throttle body and plenum, was pitch black.

Yeah man I'm kinda terrified to take apart my TB/Plenum... I took them apart on the GT and spent about an hour cleaning everything out..

But good idea on taking the TB! Didn't even think of that. Did you ever figure out what was wrong with your car, Stone?

It hasn't been smoking anymore since I sprayed the MAF and throttle body down with STP throttle body cleaner. It seems stronger too.

The inside of my TB looked like your filter. When I ran my finger along the inside of the TB, it had the texture of a thin layer of dirty grease, left my finger black.

i dont think your dealership sucks at filters. To suck with them, you kinda need to know what one is first lol.
