Less backspacing means that less of the width of the wheel is to the inside of the back side of the wheel's center where it fits up against the brake rotor. For a given width rim (say, 8"), less backspacing means that more of the wheel's width, along with the outer sidewall and shoulder of the tire, is pushed outward. Maybe think "away from the strut, toward the fenders".
