Got an 09 Gt with the 18'' factory rims. I'm looking to pick up some winter tires and save a few bucks by downsizing to a 17 rim. Looking at 235/55/17 or 215/60/17 for the tires - I'll likely be taking the wider 235/55 option.
I was going to use steel rims and the biggest size I can get is 17x7. I know the 17'' diameter will clear the calipers but will the 7'' width cause any problems? ...other than making it look like Iam sporting bicycle tires.

how do you know if the 17" fit on GT, i have the 2010 GT and have the same question... looking for 17" winter wheels

I'm not sure about the 2010's I think they have the same brake setup. The 09's come stock with 17's with an 18'' upgrade option. The brakes are the same so it doesn't matter which option you go with they'll both clear the discs (confirmed with dealership) anything less than 17'' will not. I'm just not sure how width factors in, I don't want to lose a tire while taking a sharp corner.

are you sure that all 17"s will fit? the 17" stock rims Barely clear the calipers (1/2oz stick weights will not clear the caliper)
Loose a tire? that won't happen I believe

You might be able to pick up a set of stock 17" 2010 or 2011 V6 wheels on this forum or ebay...might be good for what you are looking for.
