ok well nevermind im an idiot. apparently the nt555 do not come in a 40 for a 20' wheel...kind of disappointing really but they do make a 285/35

 

Right now your fronts and rears are the same height.. If you go 295/40/20 in th rear that is an extra two inches which is huge. I don't think you'll clear, especially if you're the slightest bit lowered. Just stick with correct tire size.. either a 295/30 or a 275/35 if you want just a bit taller in the rear..

Sorry, i am not trying to be a pain in the *** here but i think im just confused as to why the rear tire would be a 30 and the front would be a 35? I would think the aspect ratio would be the same front and rear, it is the same size rim after all?

 

Those 30 and 35 numbers really are tire section heights expressed as percentages of the tire width. IOW, a 295/30 tire will have a height of about 295 x 0.30 or about 88.5 mm.

A 255/35 works out to a height of about 89.3 mm. Trust me, you'll never see that 0.8mm difference even if you stood the two tires back to back. Not even if both tires measured out at precisely the advertised size numbers (most tires don't, exactly).

The 30, 35, 40, or whatever, are NOT absolute height numbers by themselves, and continuing to focus only on them will only keep you confused.

The aspect ratio is a ratio to the width of the tire.. Like norm said, it's a ratio to the 255 for the front.. Having a 295/30 will have a sidewall height of about 3.45 inches.. a 255/35 in the front has a sidewall height of about 3.48 inches... That is close enough to be even..

You want the heights to be close to matching.. A 295/35 is roughly a 4 inch sidewall, putting your overall rear height at 28 inches and your front at 27 inches.. It will have a slight raked appearance and will also cause a speed mismatch due to a taller tire in the rear, which will require a recal of the speedometer.. A taller tire also increases overall gearing, like going from a 3.73 rear to a 3.55 rear nearly, reducing your overall performance/driven torque...

These are your tire options I would stick with..

275/35/20
285/30/20
295/30/20
305/30/20 (you'll start running into fitment issues at this width)

 

kind of a stale post but i finally got the tire thing figured out lol. I am going to go with matte black machined AMR wheels 18x9 and 18x10 with nitto 555's 255/45/18 and 285/40/18. anybody have any suggestions on the look or tire performance?

 

I've been through a few sets through the past three years. I started with the Toyo Proxes4. They were way too soft and had no traction in the rain. My dad has an 08 cobra with Goodrich tires. He upgraded to Nitto 05's so I got the old slightly used tires. They worked well for my GT but I kind of got sideways and stayed there often so yeah. I used the stock tires for a while to save up for the Nitto555's and man when I got them, amazing difference. Traction is great all around, especially on hot days and they look great. To say the least, I'm very happy with my Nitto555's.

 

If you haven't bought them already, do a little photo editing with your car and those wheels, resizing the wheels to fit the car in the same scale.

Save the resulting picture and don't even look at it for a few days. Not at all. Then pay attention to your first reaction when you do look at it again.
