Default amp light stays on

Last night my amp light came on. I checked the alternator it was bad. I replaced it with the duralast gold. no success. still gives a 12v reading at the battery and light remains on. I have heard that the battery will not charge if the red green to guage wire ( 904 wire) to the guage cluster is not connected properly or at all. what can be done to fix this if it is so. Also is there an external regulator? it's an 87 with a 93 cobra conversion. Any ideas I would appreciate.

No external regulator. You should have approx 14 volts at the battery when the car is running, and 12.5 volts when its not. Be sure to have your battery load tested as well, just because you can get 12 v out of it doesnt mean its putting out the amps.

Also replaced the starter solenoid. no luck. Maybe I have purchased a bad alternator from the store or my wires are bad somewhere around the alt. plug.

I found that the car is an 87 with I believe a 93 cobra 340ci conversion and I believe there may have been some splicing at the alternator plug. Does anyone know for sure if the alt had to be re wired?
