Default overheating problem w/out using A/C

I was first informedthat the reason my car was overheating, was because of a faulty water temperature sensor. I was told that it is behind the alternator, next to the block (towards the front) The piece I was given to replace, doesn’t fit where they said it's located on the engine. Does anyone know where the water temperature sensor is located on a 2001 v6 Mustang? Any help would be appreciated.

Is it over heating or just reading hot?

Just reading hot. When I took it to the shop, they took a lazer reading off the engine and the engine wasn't actually hot, so I'm taking it that the sensor is bad. But I can't find the sensor to change it.

Sorry, not off hand but it should be in the block or one of the heads.
