Winter driving with my Mustang

Winter driving with my Mustang
OK, so I just got back after 2.5 months in Germany for work. Had my 2006 brand-new Mustang parked in the garage the whole time, and man it was fun to revv up that engine when I got back..... . So here's the deal: I live in metro-Detroit, MI, and we get pretty bad winters with a lot of snow here. So before all hell breaks lose for my Mustang, I was looking to winterize my car. So any suggestions on what kind of winter tires to buy?? Also, I was looking to put in extra weight in the trunk, but what exactly should I put in (sand bags????) and where can I get these from???? Lastly, in mid-December, I was planning on making a trip out to North Carolina in my Mustang for my sister's graduation. So is this trip a good idea in the winter (I was hoping not to encounter much snow while going down south.) If so, should I bother putting in winter tires on before I make the trip (would the tread on the winter tires wear out much faster????)
Thanks much for any help!!!!

RE: Winter driving with my Mustang
I've lived in Iowa my whole life. Our winters aren't much different than they are in your neck of the woods. These days, most people go with all season radials. Used to be that they changed from their street tires to snow tires every year. Go to your local tire shop and look around. have him explain the ratings on the tire. This will tell you if they are speed, traction etc. Try to compare 'apples to apples' . Don't try to compare a 75,000 mile premium tire with a 35,000 mile clearance rack junker. I don't have any specific tires in mind that I can tell you about. Just go learn a little about them. You'll do OK. Best of luck, Dave

Check out the following thread - Tirerack posted a link to a cool graph (look for "this"):

RE: Winter driving with my Mustang
I drive mine with the stock Pirelli all weather tires. I put my tools and some other junk in the back to weight it down a little. I had to plow through some pretty deep snow(up to my front bumper) in the parking lot of my job and I was impressed. People speak as though you can't drive these cars in the winter. As long as you don't have Deep/hard snow pack, you'll be fine.

Sandbags found at hardware store.. HomeDepot or Lowes. From what I remember of Detroit.. the roads are plowed.. .and "most" of the people know what to do in the snow... drive carefully and you should be fine. Just don't try to go up too many hills.
