What tires to choose...

Most people I've talked to have said they prefered Nittos or Perelli, as far as wet/dry grip, braking grip, handling, tread life, speed rating, they are in the same ball park. I think the tread appearance goes to the Nittos though.
If you didn't like the Perellis try the Nittos and just try tires each change till you find something you like.

My g/f has the PZero Nero's on her '06 Pony and they really seem decent IMO. The tirerack ratings for them aren't bad, either, for the price. But I suppose if you're doing more than typical daily driving you'd need something stickier.
Since most people here that have the 555's like them, give them a try.

i have perellis and every time i go to discount tire they recommend them to me (the guy i always go to is a mustang enthusiast). granted i slide when it is wet outside but that is only because of the lack of weight and rear wheel drive. the tred life on mine is rated to 80k but i couldnt tell you which model i have.

I have really enjoyed my HTR Z III Sumitomo's.
They handle well in wet and dry, have worn well so far
(only 4500 miles on them). They were relatively inexpensive
and have a pattern that allows you to do a 4 wheel rotation.

How many miles did you get out of the 960AS tires? FWIW, they currently appear to be on some sort of special at tire rack, so price might not be as much of a stretch as previous experience might have led you to believe.
If your unhappiness with the Pirellis had anything to do with traction or grip in any direction, you probably wouldn't be happy with any tire that falls in any of Tire Rack's "Grand Touring" categories. I'm a bit skeptical about any tire with a treadwear rating much above 420. Above that seems to consist of tires that are skewed just a little too far towards long tread life at the expense of grip or handling response. I suggest not even thinking about tires guaranteed for anything more than about 40k miles.
What about Kumho's Ecsta SPT(Ultra High Performance Summer)? Available in both 235/55-17 and 235/50-17.
