Since "AMP" said that I would reconsider believing anything they say. That info is bogus. There is no doubt that an auto with gears and CAI is fater than a stick. Keep in mind that if you are racing astick vs an auto stock for stock then the stick driver must be flawless to win. All the auto driver has to do is power brake a little bit before lauch to take away the throttle lag then floor it, they are very easy to launch and consistent.

Do the math. Figure out what %20 is...

They are pulling your leg.. or they are not that good at tuning. A tune CAI combo can add as much as 15-25hp..

Here is where I got my info,

All Mustang Performance (AMP) told me that CAI, gears, and a tune would get my auto in the same league as a manual, since the auto looses power in the transfer (?) as well as the extra weight.

A technician at Mel Pearson Ford Dealership (who claimed to have a modded up mustang himself) related to me that the auto is about 20% less powerful than the manual for the same reasons AMP listed.

All this has me down in the dumps. I can live without the extra fun of shifting gears but the thought of another (Cheaper!) mustang beating me easily is a little tough to deal with.

I have never been a motor-head nor have I moddified any car. I was really starting to look forward to it, but now I'm just not sure.

With similiar tunes, both the manual and auto make the same HP. Theauto has more parasitic loss, although not a lot more, but can shift quicker. The manual can be more fun though if you like shifting gears. Also, the manual has different gear ratios than the auto, so it can get to higher speeds quicker, but not a lot quicker. You still lose some time shifting a manual. All the different gear ratios do for you is change the torque multiplication going to the driveshaft. As has been said, you won't miss a gear in an auto. Even if you're experienced with the manual, you can miss a gear. $hit happens. The manual vs. auto really comes down to personal preference.

Don't worry, with a good tune your auto will be quick. Keep modding until you get it where you want it, or run out of money, whichever comes first.

A stall converter is definitely the 'equalizer' in the race of manual vs. auto. I've seen a lot of auto cars pick up a .5 second in the quarter mile with just a switch to a good converter. If I had an auto, it would definitely be the first mod I do.

I blew my engine twice because of email tunes. I had to put my car on a flat bed and send it to good tuner 500miles away. Autos and apparently very hard to tune with a blower and bolt ons.
The 3 dyno shops close to me wouldn't even touch this setup.

I'm kicking *** now!

Stick with the auto. I have an auto with TC, 4:30 and Vortech. It's absolutely amazing!!!!

Just to give you an idea. I raced both my cars against each other. I don't shift worth **** so I rode in my GT and a good friend of mine drove the Shelby. We went from a dig and shut off at 150mph. The Shelby was at least 100 to 150yards behind me by the time we reach 150. The potential of the auto is there just mod the hell out of it.

II got smart on CAI, tunes, and maybe gears for my 05. However, it seems that all of these mods would only make it as fast as a manual.

Should one bother to mod an auto or simply trade it in for a manual ?? I mean is it a waste of time and money since you can only get as fast as the other stangs come stock ?

I have the auto in my stang and have the usual mods, jlt cai/ 4.10s/ and bbk tb/ and most importantly is the tci 4000 stall converter and I frequent 3 different tracks and have not been out 60 footed or beat by a manual na stang yet. the 5 speeds pull better mile an hour than me, but i eat them up out of the hole so bad they cant catch me

Let me chime in...

I LOVE autos.. If it werent for "the cool thing to do" then I wouldve bought an auto. Remember, its a mustang! Auto or manual doesnt matter, its still fast as hell and highly moddable.

I know its been said in this thread already, BUT YOU NEED A TUNE. Autos wake up like the devil with tunes... Even if its a canned tune built into the tuner - fine. But you might as well spend more and get a tuner+CAI combo which will include a more customish tune... You will be glad you have an auto!

One thing I hate about autos is the tranny... So complicated. Heck, you can't even change the fluid without monitoring temps with a computer and checking level at a certain moment. Sucks. But thats all.
