Whipple using water
Geeez, sorry to hear about that Doc. All I can say, and it's easy for me as I'm fixed up now, is to stay calm about it.
At least you're ahead of the game and have diagnosed the problem early.
If it was a DIY install I would seriously doubt you'd get an exchange item up front. You might get one from Whipple direct with a returnable deposit though [?]
How much coolant have you had to add to the reservoir already? If the motor is stumbling sometimes when you hit boost, I suggest you drain the intercooler system and remove the pump fuse. You can still drive the car but resist the temptation to drive it hard. You can stomp on it occasionally but don't beat on it. The OBC will pull the spark back if intake temps are high but unless "Lethal" relocated the temp sensor to the pressurized side of the intake, it won't be as effective as it could be.
The thing to must avoid is letting the water build up in the Vee valley because when you do stamp the gas and make boost, the puddle is picked up and thrown into the motor risking the O2 sensors and Cats.
Let us know how you get on. Stay cool.
Marcus

give Jared at Lethal a call.he will assist you, for sure.
i think Whipple needs to recall all of those suspected products that are potentially bad.
the customers are probably paying double the price for installs and then installing a new one.
unless you are doing it yourself. Come on Whipple.....get your head out of your *** and fix this.
sending replacements is cool and all.....but recall that lot of ****ty items and stop wasting our time on this stuff.

Well, I removed the blower off of the intake. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Took about an hour.
It's leaking quite a bit. There's a very large puddle in there but that's probably because of the pressure test I did. I only checked it at 5 lbs...
I drained the intercooler system the best I could before doing the pressure test but there was probably still a bit left in the heat exchanger...
I'd say so far I've only added about 1 cup but then I've only driven the car twice since the install.
Knew there was something really wrong with the way it was stumbling on takeoff. Checked fuel pressure, etc but all was good.
I think I attached a photo of the coolant in the intakebut not sure if I did it right...
Oh well, I've got another vehicle to drive so that's not a problem.
There was a car show coming up this week though... Was hoping to show it off.
Thanks everyone for all your help!

An hour to remove is good. Alternative Auto swapped mine out in a little under 3 hours.
Your puddle seems similar to my own in footprint. Can you see the weep point on the intercooler? I saw on my own three repair welds on the core along the bottom, perhaps that's normal in the manufacturer process, or maybe it's indicative of quality control pulling up on poor cores.......
So now you play the waiting game to see what "Lethal" and Whipple suggest.
Shame you stripped it in a way, you could have made the car show with the system dry

I looked around the bottom of the intercooler but didn't see any place where it might have been leaking.
Oh, the coolant is pink because of the Redline Water Wetter...
I sat it on a white towel on my workbench for a while and then when I lifted the unit off the rag I could see coolant stains up near the front of the intercooler.
I also saw some repair welds on the bottom near the back.
When you had yours fixed what did they say about your plugs, O2 sensors and Cats? Did they think any damage was done to them?
I don't think I've driven it nearly enough to do any kind of damage. I checked one of the plugs and it looks new. Just a bit of carbon on the upper part of the shank...
Thanks.

If you've lost a cup or two of water you're fine, no problemo
A few years ago, the Eaton blowers, as fitted to the F150 Lightning trucks, used to do the same thing after 10/15k miles, in a lot of cases the amount of water through the exhaust was significant as the drivers merely kept topping the water up before getting fed up and telling Ford (Obviously not really grasping the significance). Many of them had dead O2 sensors and damaged Cats.
The water only kills the sensors and Cats if a LOT of water is hammered past/through them in surges instead of dribbling constantly. Paradoxically, getting on the throttle often is the best way to reduce the damage done in this situation as it clears the intake regularly

Hey Markus glad everything was fixed. So this problem was strictly from the manufacturer right? I mean when I get mine installed through Lidio at Alternative I don't want to chance getting one of those intercoolers in the bad batch. Did Whipple give out those numbers to Lidio for future reference? Email me when you read this so I know whats up in the future. Thanks Jason.....Oh if you ever have to make the trip back to Detroit (hope that never happens due to a S/C problem) call me and you can stay at the house and have your car in the garage in the mean time so you wont have to pay for another hotel. Hope it helps Jason
Hi Jason !!
Yea, it's strictly a manufacturing problem and not Whipple either, the company they use for their intercooler supply. I hope Whipple have ripped them a new one by now for this problem..
Lidio was real good about it, as good as he could be in the circumstances. Naturally all work on my car was gratis including tune verification and Valet mode creation.
It's the second problem he's had with Whipples although he's sticking with them as he maintains they are the best one for the job by a long way. Things like this are bound to happen sometimes I suppose.
I don't anticipate getting across the border again before the WoodWard weekend (Are you going?) but I do plan on getting to Lidio again before the end of the Summer to get some Manly brakes fitted, need to do some research beforehand. We should definately try to hook up at that time !
Cheers

Yes I definitely plan on going to Woodward Dream cruise and a few after parties. If you come out I will gladly offer my home and garage to you for use while in the states and during the cruise! Take care and I hope to have the Whipple done before the cruise but it might be close as Lidio has to be out of his shop and in the new one by the end of the month. Later Jason
I had planned to come over for Friday Morning. Goof about on the Friday, stay in the hotel Friday night, park up early Saturday Morning and spend the day staggering around carrying a folding chair, camera and beer.
Hotel is in Troy, I couldn't get anything closer or more centrally located along the route.
Don't scream at me, but I wasn't planning to bring the Mustang. Can't drive it on the Saturday anyway, so don't see the point.
