V6 or V8?
I too have owned both the V6 and GT. #1 The gas mileage between them for me is exactly the same. #2 my car insurance went up by $2.00 per month for the GT. Get what you want, but don't base your decision on the cost of ownership, because they're the same, base your decision on the sticker price you can afford and your wants and needs. My only regret is not buying the GT to begin with, I lost big time on the trade in.

It's remarkable that the EPA only estimates the V6 to be 1mpg worse when you consider it's 100 extra horsepower, 2 extra cylinder, and .6 litres larger. I just checked it myself to make sure you got that right.
Some people report getting 24 or 25 MPG average with the GT. I don't know how they do it because at 55mph my best fuel economy according to the dash is 24mpg. I average about 20.5mpg in my GT automatic overall but I do 80-90 on the highway and it's really really cold here so that's negatively affecting the mileage.
For what it's worth, when I had a V6 for a rental I averaged about 25mpg... that was in warmer weather however.
I'm skeptical that driven the same way and other variables being the same, a V6 will only be 1mpg better in the real world. It probably won't be as high as 5 however. Even given the price of gas these days, I will go out on a limb and say the gas cost will be negligible.
Insurance costs are also higher for the GT.
Personally, I think the GT is acutally the better value, surprsingly, even publications like Consumer Reports echoes this sentiment. If the V6 automatic (preimum package, pony package, traction control, 17 inch alloys, interior upgrade) is spec'd the same as a GT automatic the price difference isn't huge.
Also, notice that the automatic costs MORE for the V6 than the GT (860 - 550). Finally, the V8 engine from 06 forward has been shown to be slightly more reliable than the V6 according to CR.
They're both way more power you can use in the real world anyways unless you go to the track. I thought the V6 was high in fun factor, not as fun as the GT stock v stock, but high in the fun factor nonetheless.
My final and most important point is that if you're going for the automatic, I found the auto transmission performance in the V6 to be way rougher and slower than the GT. Shockingly, the GT was ultra smooth and snappy.

good point guys, but is gas negligeable? I don't want the V8 and find out that theres a 5 mile per gallon difference between the V6 and V8.
thanks everyone

I never reported to get 24-25 mpg. I get 27 mpg everyday at 55-60 mph. The engines are both good. The GT engine made the list being one of the best all time. The 6er engine has been proven in Ford Rangers for years. Simply but, if you have more power, more cylinders etc, the GT engine doesn't have to work as hard as a lesser powered engine to move close to the same weight so it could save on fuel. I don't know how else to explain why the fuel economy that I am getting is so much better than the 6 banger.

Like most here have said, it all depends on your driving habits. If you are going to try to jack-rabbit every light, your mpg will not bee that great.
I bought the car for the looks, not so much as the performance. If I wanted a performance car I would have bought the Shelby.

the v8 gets just as good or better then the v6 mpg wise

I think there is a misconception when it comes to V6 Vs V8 on gas mileage. Yes, the V8 gets better mpgthan the older model Mustangs but still doesn't get better gas mileage than a V6.....period.
That's like saying putting duals on a V6 will sound like a V8....it may come close, but it will not match that sound.

Anyway, if I had known the GT's get as good of gas mileage, I may have considered a used one over my 6. Don't get me wrong, I love this car and it has plenty of pep, I love the way it handles and how it looksand I have no plans of replacing it with a GT.
As far as the guy building the clone, you can do it with either. Cosmetically, I think more parts are interchangeable with the six cylinder (rockers, front fascia brackets, ?) so it would be cheaper, but probably negligible compared to the overall cost.
Yeah, alot of people judge their fuel economy based on what's on the info center. Basically I could coast down a hill and hit the reset button and report 50+ MPG. If you are going to use the info center you need to go several tanks of gas doing your usual driving (without resetting the it) and then see what it says. I did 3 tanks of gas doing just city driving doing that and averaged 9.8 MPG.
If all you're going to be doing is "posing", then get a V6 with the least amount of options as possible to make it cheaper. That way you can have more money for "posing" it up.

Who cares about speed, fuel economy, etc. If your #1 reason for buying it, is to make it a Shelby poser, then buy the absolute cheapest Mustang you can get and put it all into "posing" it up. V6 or GT, get the cheapest.
