gears no tune? ..yet.
Wait; you're supposed to get A WHOLE NEW TUNE when you get gears?
I thought you could just change the parameters on your normal tune? That's what Brenspeed told me when I emailed them?

Thats what I thought too but Doug at Bamachips said NO !!!! I then called Brenspeed and after explaining all this to them they sent me an updated tune, boy could you tell the difference, before the revised tune I got the gears installed and thought this really isn't that much of a change !!! lol After loading the revised tune, bam !!! Its not a whole new tune they just tweek some stuff.
You will notice the difference
again this is for AUTO, not sure about manuals.

Did Brenspeed send you that new tune for free? Or did you have to pay?
Because if I'm gonna have to pay, well...I always wanted to try one of Doug's tunes, since I have an auto and EVERYONE keeps raving about them.

So I talk to doug about this and this was his response
That's right, on a manual you can do it with the tuner and you'll be fine in most cases. There is a value in the Drive By Wire tables that can to be adjusted but this isn't really required but just a nice thing to do. I'll do it if at the time the customer places their order they have gears but if they are changed at a later date then they can just change the setting in the tuner.
On the auto's I have to change the shifting points in the files because they are set at part throttle by MPH and this is why I have to do this. Most tuners don't do this but since I remap the entire shifting range I do.
So you can get away without a retune, especially with a manual. If you are an auto it would be recommended that you ask for a new tune though. Now with Doug since he does his tunes for free this isnt an issue. Brenspeed customers might have to pay the 50 retune fee, but I didnt email Brent to find out if he does his tunes like this or not.
This is consistent with what I was thinking about the difference between the manuals and autos.

I think he usually charges if you don't purchase the parts from him, its funny when I got my LT headers he updated the tune to remove the O2 sensor alarms and charged like $20, but when I called and let him know about the gears he just sent the updated tune.
I wish i lived close to his shop, finding good shops out here is difficult.
good luck

With a manual trans, you can get away with just switching the parameters in your handheld youself.
With an automatic, the trans shift pressures and tables are based on certain road speeds at certain rpms and throttle positions. By changing out the gears, your effectively altering all those road speeds. All those speeds need to be gone thru and rescaled for the new gears. If you don't rescale these tables properly, then you will always be reading the wrong roadspeed and your car may not shift properly or in some severe cases, may not shift at all!
AS for the CAI/tune combo or gears... while I say Don't fear the gear, I do think that it's almost a manditory first mod to do a CAI and tune...
