I wouldn't recommend installing gears yourself unless you have all the proper tools, knowledge, etc. Once gears start howling from being installed improperly, they won't ever stop. I'm getting ready to have my mechanic install some 3.55s.

You should be able to get gears and have them installed for $350 or less. A 75-76mm MAF and CAI or K&N w/ air silencer removed would give you some more power and throttle response, too. A good tune up would be a great idea if it's been a while. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, oil change/filter..... bump your timing to 12-13, depending on your car.
