AOD Torque Converter Question

AOD Torque Converter Question
I have about 200 miles on my new motor. A couple of weeks ago I started leaking tranny fluid out of the front seal so I dropped the tranny and replaced it. The leaking stopped but I developed a knocking noise under the hood. Neighbor says it's the engine which I don't want to believe. Might or might not be the tranny.
Somebody here at work says that if you unbolt the torque converter from the flywheel, you have enough play to push it back so that you can start the motor without engaging the tranny and possibly rule out one or the other. Well, I unbolted it and tried to push it back and it would not go. Is this true or false?
I would like to get to the root of the problem and get my car back on the road. Thanks.
