its because reverse isnt synchronized in the t5's. so the gears are still spinning when you put it into reverse, they just grind a little bit before they engage. putting it in gear helps stop the gears by applying pressure, you cant exactly cout to ten everytime you need to go into reverse

It is completely normal and most people have ways to reduce it or eliminate it. I go from 5th to reverse and mine wont grind, but correct, reverse isn't synchronized.
