Default 28 or 31 Spline

I am replacing everything in my rearend. Posi, Axles, Gears, the works. What spline should I go with? Also what all would I need for this project? New seals and bearing, gasket, what else?

Thanks for the help.

i believe they are already 31spline in 86-93 8.8's....???

i just did my whole rearend, got the whole deal from strange, 31spline and they include c-clip eliminators and what not for 320ish i think it was. dont forget about c-clip elims. especially if your doing some sort of locker or spool.

I am replacing everything in my rearend, because my bearing went out and my mustang is my only transportation so im sure that the axles and everything else is messed up, also everything is 20 years old as its an 85.

Don't even think about rebuilding the rear end in that car. Its a 7.5 ring and pinion and will always be the week link in your drive train, and you'll be rebuilding it again in a year or two. Find a used 8.8 and gut it. Replace everything with 31 spline axles, diff, etc. The 8.8 slips right in. It is a direct replacement for the 7.5.

I would also scrounge the junk yards for 87 and up pick up trucks and look for the 8.8 locking carrier. It is 31 spline, has the 7/8" diff pin instead of the 3/4" pin and uses the same track loc rebuild kit as a stock 5.0 8.8" rear diff. It is the cheap way to get the FRPP 8.8 31 spline heavy duty track loc unit. Plus junk yard hunting is fun. Pack a lunch and have at it!
