ok, 68 fastback, 289 4 speed. electronic ignition and electric choke. just bought it. when i turn the key it cranks for a minute then tries to turn over and kick. sometimes if i give it gentle gas it'll start. also after running it it may stall out and i have the same problem getting it to turn over. i also get a little back fire some times. not sure if there is something wrong with the points or spark. think it has something to do with the carb. (4v holley). thanks for any help/input.

 

Since you just got it, and probably don't know the history of what has been done to it, I would suggest you do a complete tune-up. I would replace the plugs, plug wires, rotor, dizzy cap, set the timing, adjust the carb, etc. I would also drain the gas and replace it with new gas. I would also replace the fuel filter and air filter. That way, you may cure the problem, and better yet, you will know what has been done regarding tuning the engine. You need a base line to know what to do next. This will give you a base line.
