Hello,
The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) Hose goes from the rear of the passenger side valve cover to the inlet at the rear base of the carb. You should replace that hose. They are readily available at parts suppliers. I just got a motorcraft for about 11 bucks. You must also have a PCV valve as well in the valve cover gromet. If there is one in there already, pull it and shake. It should not be clogged and the peice inside should rattle around freely. Better yet, Just buy a new one. A FRAM is prob two bucks.
It is not dangerous if missing. However, you should have them in place.
One other thing that I notice in your picture is that the choke tube-the one coming from the exaust manifold to the choke- is not secured. Tighted the brass fitting.
Other than that you should be fine. It appears that the peice removed was some type of heater/water valve. Should not be an issue if it is not there.
Good Luck
