The more I think about it, the more I think I want to convert to manual steering. All of my P/S components leak so it's probably a matter of time before I have to do something with that anyway. I'll probably look around for the conversion parts and see what I can find. Do they sell conversion kits anywhere?

Steering systems are much like cooling systems in that all parts seem to need attention at the same time. The first thing you need to do is replace idler-arm and tie-rod ends to eliminate them from the equation. (these are the cheapest/lowest cost items). If that fixes the problem, good. If not you most likely have my old problem which was a steering gear that had a bad spot and would stick on left-hand turns. I disconnected the Pittman arm and attached a very strong spring to it and turned the wheel. It stuck. New gear time. At that point in time (1978) you could not buy new gears for these cars and I had to find a used one. The only one I could locate was a 1967 big-block gear with the coupler. This requirred I use the entire 1967 syatem. But it works. Plus I have a coupler instead of the old set-up.

you could always use this as an excuse to rebuild the front end AND put in a manual R&P.

Yeah - but just DO NOT get a Flaming River rack & pinion system... (ask me why I know...)

I have a 66 it had PS but started to leak. I got the Flaming River steering box and sold all the old PS stuff.

AllIneededwas the gear box and a PS to MS conversion for the drag link (may be different on the 68)

The steering box was tight at fist but had zero play now its has freed up a bit and is really pretty easy to steer but has a little bit of play (no big deal really)

I have no regrets a lot cheaper than a R&P setup and almost as nice (a lot better than the old power steering crap thats for sure)
