That's what people can do now.

But it wasn't always so. I also remember very clearly seeing the 2 x 4 over-the-counter availability for the 289.

Carb size was most likely in the 375-ish range like these Carter WCFB models.

I once had a pair of those on a polyspherical-head Chrysler 318, which is not all that much more engine than a 289. Even though the secondaries were mechanical, they were staged, and with a progressive linkage between the two carbs driveability was not as bad as you might think.

Thumpin - with respect to the things that people tried and actually brought to market, do you remember the Man-A-Fre setup?

I never knew of dual carbs on a 289, but I do remember the tri power set up. And ya I would think carb adjustment would be a nightmare.
I saw this car that recently sold in Jan 2011 on Ebay with a tri power set up.

OK listen up, .040 289, FMS292 hyd. cam, Keith Black flat tops w-O gap ring, Edelbrock RPM 202 heads, Crane gold rollers, Edelbrock RPM air gap w-Holley 650 dp mechanical secondary, windage tray ect. Broke this in 3 months ago and was very impressed with the combination( in 63 factory 4sp T10 8"Trac lock w-3.25 geared Falcon Futura). Was offered a Edelbrock RPM air gap dual quad w- two Edelbrock 1404 carbs, installed them two weeks ago right out of the boxes with fixed linkage( non progressive) and I can tell you it this set up improved 2000 though 6000 rpm drasticly. No hesitation or stumble any where no matter how you mash the peddle. The BFG 235/60s are useless in first and second and marginal in 3rd and 4th. The right combination of parts or just lucky?
I will do know of a bowtie guy with Holleys and a tunnel ram that is about to throw in the towel though.

OK, there were two 289 dual-quad setups. One was a medium-rise with a pair of Carters, and a high-rise with a pair of Holleys. Both will fit under a stock flat hood.

Most people who doubt the 2X4 setup have never driven one..These factory type setups are not to be confused with tunnel rams and big double pumper type race only setups..With a progressive linkage and vacuum secondary carbs they can actually be very streetable..In most cases a modern intake and single carb will make more power on todays street engines but the 2X4s are way cool looking on an old school muscle car..

Careful- After inflation that's over $1600 in today's money.

You can get a dual-quad from Summit, etc. for about $1200.
