Default 1965 Original Radio

I was talking to a man today, and we got on the subject of the original radio. As we talked, it brought up the point that their were a few different variations of this AM radio. How many were their, what was different about them all, and why were they different?

So far, we had gotten that their was one that started with 5, one that started with 6, and I think our convertible (we didn't have it at the show today, and I didn't think to check when we got back) has a symbol between the 10 and 12 on the dial.

That symbol was a civil defense symbol. If they dropped the big one back then, you would have tuned the radio to that symbol to get civil defense info. LOL!

It appears that Ford used several different makes & types of radios in classic Mustangs. Here's a neat overview.

Yep, the little triangles were CONELRAD (Control of Electromagnetic Radiation) indicators, all radio stations would tell you to re-tune to 640 kHz and 1240 kHz (well, we called them kilocycles then) frequencies when it was time to "duck and cover". Basically so you could kiss your butt goodbye. In school, we'd go into the hall, away from the windows, and sit in the fetal position. In the schools with no hall, you got under your desk. Ah, the good old days, when people were building Bomb shelters in the backyard.
