I have 1966 mustang with a 302 built up to 347.. I'm looking for help on different distributors I can put in it .. Most of the ones I see have vaccum advance and my old one sis not .. Also it has steel gears.. I don't much about them so was hoping someone could help

you will need to make sure when you buy a new distributor that the new one has a hardened steel gear. If it does not come with one, you can remove the existing gear and install a hardened gear prior to installing it in the car.

I bought a cheap amazon HEI distributor for my 347. It did run great and fired up awesome. But after a year the cheap HEI started having problems. So I picked up a petronix flame thrower distributor. That one burned out on me after about 6 months. Summit did warranty it for me. So now I have an MSD pro billet and it is doing great. The only issue is that it is large and my air filter hit is. So I had to buy a smaller air filter. Bit so far so good.
It rand the best with the cheap HEI but that thing pretty much fell apart. If you go with a HEI style, make sure and buy a good unit. Don't go cheap.

 

I would go a step further and recommend NOT using the hardened steel gear and use the Composite (plastic type gear) It far easier to install and has zero risk of eating your cam (been down that road before) and it WONT dissolve like the bronze gear and WONT wear out at all (at least not yet and I have many miles on it)

unfortunately, the composite gear has been known to have a short life span. the melonized crane gear is the best one made and is compatible with all cam materials contrary to what some inaccurate articles in some magazines say.

I always preferred my Duraspark II setup. I ran the early style cap so there was no interference with the air cleaner and the system is dead nuts reliable.
