Default rubber gromet in firewall

Is there a special tool to run a wire thru the gromet in the firewall. I need to run a ground to the engine block for some of my gauges and that what autometer suggested. ANy tricks to getting this done without damaging the gromet.

You don't really need a gromet if the wire you're running through the firewall is a ground wire(?) I mean, even if the wire does "short out" at the firewall, the firewall is also a ground lol
