Default 2v Aussie or 4v Cleveland heads?

I am confused about which heads to use. I have the stock 4bbl Cleveland heads on the 1970 351 in my stang. I read where the 4bbl heads are too big to make good low end street power but great on open track. Then i also read that the 4bbl heads are great with the right cam and intake. I rebuilt it 15 years ago after the 11.1 pistons cracked due to detonation on pump gas. I detuned to the stock 2bbl piston (9.1?), stock intake, stock carb with the 4bbl heads. It runs well but it has no real power. I was thinking with the 2v Aussie closed chamber heads, Performer intake and 650-750 cfm carb, 270 comp cam, and pistons close to 10.1 compression, that this engine might wake up and not embarrass me. Any thoughts?

2v closed ausie's are good . your stock 4 bbl should be a 735 cfm holley . the profmer is a lattral move from stock get the RPM it wil match the 270 cam better . 10 .0 is great compression for the street .

Thanks fats429. I was wondering if you knew whether or not a set of stock 2v cleveland heads from the 70-73 era, would work almost as well as the Aussie heads. I dont know if the stockers are open or closed or if they had both. Do you think the 270 comp cam will be a good street grid for everyday driving? I'd love to have some umph when i hit the gas but still be a good driver (auto trans, air cond) in traffic.

/\/\ 2V aussie closed chamber heads /\/\

Who is the MAN that was a tuff find

the way to tell oppen from closed chambers . closed chamber heads have a coumbustion chamber shaped like a drunk letter D , oppen chamber heads have coumbustion chamber shaped like a circle and they SUCK but I get them milled like this

.040 off the head
.040 off the sides of intake manafolid
.057 off the bottom of intake manafolid

you cut the manafolid to match the head , evry thing gose down together

I got the numbers out of a hot rod mag a coupple years ago and the work nice had the job done twice so far and mabey one more time if I could ever find the street boss intake manafolid to build a 351 W/C clivor engin one more time

They come in 2V and 4V depending on your desired powerband!

Thank you guys again. I do appreciate your input. I think I will try the Aussie 2v closed chamber heads and the RPM maniford with a 750 Holley and vacuum secondaries. My power band for the street will be lower than for the track. Lots of time and money are going into this redo. While I am at it, i plan to add and AOD, aluminum drive line and change the gears from 3:00 to 1 to 3:73. Once the mechanical part is done to satisfaction, I will concentrate on the ride and suspension quality. Thanks again for the input. BTW what do you think about a pertronix electronic conversion over perhaps a Mallory Unilite distributor?

pertronix is a great conversion if you just want to have an easy conversion from points, but for the performance pack its just better to get full out Electronic ignition and cut the points just out, you get to have a wider range of options to you.

Now if you are going to be dumping alot of money into this project then why not go the race (smart) way and get the aluminum 2V aussie heads, they flow better, have higher compression (Or lower if you really want) and take LOTS of weight off. They arent that expensive and you can get a set race ready for under 1500 bux (Complete with rollers!)
Spend the extra moolah and get the best, just like with Electronic Ignition

as far as the iggygoes I am a MSD man , but mallory make a quailty unit , for a street engin you should use a vac advance just cause it wont load up the plugs as bad . you have more controle over the curve with mach. advance but will be changing the plugs alot more often

I did the pertronix electronic conversion on my old pick up with a FE , not to crazy about it , looks sloppy . IMO the dizzy , box and coil is a better looking job IMO

I see your point on the aluminum race heads. Where can you get the 2 v aluminum heads with rollers for $1500? Regarding the electronic ignition, the Pertronix is not a true electronic ignition? I hate to add the MSD box to the engine bay as i am trying to stay as stock looking as possible under the hood.

Then hide the box inside behind the dash and run wires out to it.

As for the 2V heads just write the guy on ebay, he has a website you can go to and you can order directly from Australia, or him and shipping is free both ways im pretty sure.

April is getting the 4V heads for her Mach, its going to be kinda crappy in the bottom end untill we get a super for it.
