Meh, Vipers just arnt the best performers for the cost.
NO NEW car is 'the best performer for the buck, but in terms of just new cars, then yes, you're right. There are faster more hp/litre motors out there for less or about the same price.

The new civic SI puts out 5 more hp per liter than the e46 m3, and I'm sure there are more efficient that are reciprocating motors.
What would happen if Honda made a 3.X motor making the same amounts of horsepower/litre they do in the SI, and then managed to give it some gears with a decent suspension stock?

And then put it into some kind of solstice/miata type car? Mustang killer?
True, i should have specified. I was referring to new cars. And if honda did that then they would make a lot of money, assuming that they kept in relatively inexpensive. Lets hope honda never gets into the market of bigger engines. If honda made v8 sportscars... not good for us American Muscle lovers.

The new Viperlooks really impressive.the knock on the old Viper was the clutch action was not as smooth as the 'Vette's, and it wasn't geared as well - hence it was a tick slower than the Z06.

I think the tables are turning on GM. The Z06 was a stand out compared to the Viper because it offeredcomperableperformance for less money. However, the new 600hpSS Vette thatwill replace the Z06 will be over 100k according to Motor trend, and will be alimited production. Dodge certainly has the upper hand in this escalating horsepower war. With 8.4 litres to play with, theyhave room to up the ante without turning to F/I as the new Vette will.

I've ridden in a Viper, and to me it really captures that Shelby Cobra feel i.e.small car, big torque. It was just a really entertaining car, whereas the 'Vette is a littlebland by comparison.

GM does'nt have to match the Viper HP for HP. weight plays a big role. This SS Corvette is losing weight. I've heard of a curb weight of 29xx lbs.

When the FI 'Vette comes out, they are discontinuing the Z06?! I hope that isn't true. I'd gladly pay $70k for a Z06, but $100k+ for a 'Vette? Not so much.

Kudos to GM if they can shed more weight - that's impresssive. I'd like to see more of that amongst all cars. Cars in general are very heavy these days.

I don't think they will get rid of the ZO6 either. One will be N/A (ZO6) and one will be FI (SS). A limited # of SS's being produced will drive the price to well over $100K. The Shelby is fetching $15-20K over sticker so you could just imagine what kind of mark-up's are in store for this SS Corvette.

As long as they don't lose that $70k price point. $70k for a C6 Z06 is tremendous value. Once you get over $100k thoough, I am not so sure. It depends on what that $100k+ gets you. If it's just an FI Z06, then no thanks.

We really don't know all the bells and whistles this SS trimed Vette will have. I do know there is some weight reduction involved . There will be much more Carbon fiber parts/panels going into this Vette. (carbon fiber is pricey). Weight reduction on a car thats already light is a expensive task when designing a car and as well as you know GM is'nt exactly "rolling in the dough" so they have no choice but to pass the savings (lol) on to us poor HP staving consumers.

It would need a world class interior for me to even think of dropping $100k+ on it. I wouldn't be interested in it if all it does is go fatser than a Z06. I don't live near the salt flats, so I'd never see the top end. And how much faster than a Z06 do I need to go? If I bought a Z06, I'd do intake and full exhaust - period. What's that get me? Damn near close to 10's. Good enough.

I'm with Bickety. If I was in the market for a car like that, it would be hard to spend my money on a Corvette when I could pick up a phatty Benz or Porsche. The overall experience of the car would have to be worth the 100k+ to me or it wouldn't be worth it... and that includes an amazing interior.

If I just wanted a fast car, I'd buy the C6 Z06 and throw on an intake, full exhaust, nitrous and a tune and call it a day. If I wanted a $100,000+ car, I want a freaking luxury sports car experience!
