It's cut like that to fit the larger diameter springs, mine are the same way except mine are much cleaner looking. The first set they sent me i returned because when they made that cut the bit was dull and it didn't cut cleanly, the new set they sent me is mint. I have to say i was quite impressed with the customer service.

my AFR 185's had pieces of the valve pocket missing also after about 5000kms. and at 1000kms had 3 rocker studs break.

Hmm that's kinda hard to see. I know metal is missing there on mine cause they milled it off to fit the larger springs. You're saying it was there before and broke off during use?
