Default Intake manifold swap

First let me appologize if this has been asked before, I'm new to the forums and did not see anything regarding this. Anyway on to the question, I've heard some people say that you cannot change the intake manifold alone on the car and see any positive results. That changing the intake alone will actually cause you to lose power because of the way the heads and manifold work together. I was looking to get an Edelbrock Performer 2 for my 90 5.0, but since I heard these remarks I wanted to find out before I went and spent the money on one. Right now I cannot afford to buy the new heads so that's not an option just yet. Thanks for the help everyone and again sorry if this has been asked before.

Thats not true, you will see powergains. They will not be as large as if you had a h/c package along with it but you will see power. Its NOT a waste of money... trust me!
