Overheating
if you have tried it on a cold day or night and it stayed cool, I wouldn't eliminate the radiator.
Did you stay stock with the compression and displacement?
If you want to check the thermostat, get a good themometer and throw the thermostat in boiling water on a stove until it opens.

the radiators flowing good after t-stat opens, and i didnt change any compression and displacement from before the build, just freshened the 306 up with new rings, bearings, and hone.
Just replaced the t-stat day before yesterday and still no change

I KNOW THE FEELING ......for 3 years I drove my DD jetta around with a dead cooling fan , stop and go traffic coming over the potomac river bridge here was death on friday's , before reaching the bridge I'd have a 1/2 mile climb up a small hill , must of started it no less than 50 times......the cooling fan for these was obsolete so just recently I found one and no longer have the issue, but it'd often hit 3/4 gauge
