Default KICKDOWN???

hey guys, im having problems with theshifting, seems at 60mph my stang needs another gear, sounds like shes running a little high ont he rpm's. i do have 17's all around but my question is....i lifted her up to notice where the kickdown cable should be there is nothing and the kickdown lever is just there attached to nothing..

whats the purpose of the kickdown?? could this be effecting it?

First of all, from a stop, how many times do you feel it shift? Wondering if it is shifting to all 3 gears. What trans? C4? The kick down fights with the modulator for gears....kick down holds it in lower gear, modulator causes it to upshift.

i startoff and first change in gears is around 25 and second change is around 40 then nothing after that. does that mean all three gears have been engaged? or do the change in gears actually mean gears? anyway, by having no cable on the kickdown, what is this actually doing?

The 69 did not have a kickdown cable, it had a big S shaped rod. When you push the pedal to the floor, the kickdown drops the trans to the next lower gear, to facilitate acceleration. Ford thought this was so important even six cylinder cars had it.

yea thats the thing but as you guys say it has to do with downshifting rather than upshifting. i guess my problem is having big wheels in the rear.

next question, if the vaccum to the transmission was clogged, what would that cause?
and third question, if the modulator was fcuked up, what would that cause?

clogged vacuum would cause it to not upshift, or upshift very late (high in th RPM band). The modulator tells it at what vacuum pressure to shift, which could also cause delayed shifts if messed up... Sounds to me like you are used to driving a car with overdrive. Your c-4 or c-6 auto is only 3 gears. If you feel two shifts, then nothing is wrong. 1-2 then 2-3 shifts... An overdrive trans swap is fairly easy if you have a basic knowledge of mechanics.

i'd say being based in Cyprus means forking out plenty of money for shipping. but ya. just as all others say. if it shifts from first to second, then to third then this is working. the kickdown rod will cause it to shift back when you floor it.

just as I asked in the other thread. what tyre size do you have in the back, and what does the door data tag read? we can then tell you what rpm you're probably doing at 70mph
