What... the hell?!
Afixer -- Believe it or not, I actually went to college to become a cop. I was also an Explorer with my local police department until I was 21 (the age at which you must "retire"). So, I do know that there are great people out there who are police officers. There are also bad ones. I don't let either of the type characterize the people in the profession overall.
I just do not like it when people use the rationalization or justification that "there are worse things." You know what I mean? So, basically, that qualifies us, them, whoever the subject of the comment is, as "not the worst," but little more than that. Now, without getting into flag-waving and nonsensical jingo, I think a lot of people either want to think that we are "the best" in this nation, or that we strive to be "the best" when it comes to justice and human rights. I do - or at the very least, make sure that we are a leader in this area, rather than just better than the worst. It hits me as setting the bar awfully low. I'm not attacking you, just trying to put in perspective where I'm coming from.

Ok see if I understand this....You are saying an adult NOT wearing a seatbelt is his / her choice and not a lawful concern? I am not sure where you are from but here in canada its the law and it carrys a serious penalty if not followed.
Did you know that if Adults sitting in the back seat not wearing their seatbelt can become projectiles and kill the driver and the front passenger?

B) If it's the driver's car, he or she has every right in the world to impose and enforce their own rules in their car. Again, it's a matter of responsibility. Again, doesn't matter to me.
In New Hampshire they don't have safety belt laws. New Hampshire is a state very well known to protect personal freedoms, sometimes to the fault of allowing irresponsibility.
Here's an article I just read, about how kids are more at risk from being hit by, and injured more seriously by SUVs, minivans and trucks. Perhaps there should be a law to protect the children from these vehicles, rather than the suggestion that parents take the personal responsibility to watch for their own kids safety? I mean, that's the point we're at in this society. Here's a link to the story.
NO i DONT WANT IT CLEARED UP, i WANT A SUPER HUGE FLAME WAR, EVERYONE SUCKS AND ONLY MY OPINION IS RIGHT

A) That's exactly what I'm saying. In the United States, the general intent for a statutorial law is to fulfill a "compelling public interest." I, as a member of the public, do not care whether you or your passengers or anyone else buckle your safety belt, as it has no bearing on my personal safety. Just as I don't care what you eat, whether or not you smoke, or whatever personal habits you or your friends may partake in that may pose a threat to your personal safety. It's not my business, as it does not affect me.

Hey, that makes complete sense to me...infact I agree with you 100%. If Joe Blow is not wearing his seatbelt and dies, well thats his choice. I know that anyone in my car MUST wear one, because here if the passengers are not wearing one the driver gets fined. Also I would hope that my family and friends buckle up because I care about them

Funny you should say that I was on 70 last week near Mid Rivers Mall Drive and I saw a cop do that. What gives.

As for back seat passengers...I think the only time I had one was when my mom's car broke down and I had to pick up her and my dad somewhere...and I'm sure she buckled up!And I should say, it's not so much that "I don't care" in a callous sort of way if someone is hurt or killed, but I do not think we need laws that infringe upon the liberties of others that serve the mere function of ensuring that one is providing for their own safety and exercising personal responsibility. Of course I don't want anyone getting injured or killed...hell, having been the way I was in high school, I take a second every time I hear about kids dying from speeding (there's one road in particular around me that's notorious for this) because my friends and I were the same way. But the fact is, if we want to call ourselves "free," perhaps we should start living like it. Basic responsibility, in such a society, would not be imposed by or through law. Just wanted to clear up that I'm NOT as much of an a-hole as I may have come across as. It's not like I'm saying "go off and die, then!"
i remember in my old bonneville i was on teh highway and the speed limit is 100 and the cop was in teh slow lane and i he was doing the limit and i was doing 105, lol it was the slowest pas ever lol the cop looked at me like he thought i was trying to push his buttons lol
im british, my grand father was a cop and so was my father befor he left the force.. and i didnt know that! LOL we just call them bobby's!

It's a shortened form of what they used to be called in England: Constable On Patrol.

BTW do you know why they call Police "Cops" ? I heard that back in the day their badges or shields were made out of copper so gangsters started calling them "Coppers"....it was then later shortened to "Cops"
Could be **** but sounds like a good reason
